Barriers to assessment and learning

1️. Learning Style Shifts:

New subjects, teaching methods, and a dynamic curriculum can pose challenges to learners because this new and dynamic educational environment requires qew phase of their school career and going to high school – this leap from primary school to high school is a big change which also requires a great deal of adaptation from the learner.uick thinking and adaptation. Your child may struggle to adapt, which causes them to fall behind their peers. Some learners are entering a new phase of their school career and going to high school – this leap from primary school to high school is a big change which also requires a great deal of adaptation from the learner.

2. Mental Health Matters:

The pressures of academic excellence, coupled with social dynamics, may affect your child’s mental well-being. Struggling to adapt to new environments can cause mental anguish which have negative implications on your child’s mental health. Their emotional well-being has a direct correlation with how they perform academically, that is why it is of upmost importance to prioritise their emotional well-being so that they can achieve academically. Some learners struggle to keep up with the increased academic workload and have problems managing their time – this sometimes causes acute stress and anxiety, which may even lead to depression. Many learners suffer from depression but try to mask it. They present with low energy, low self-esteem, social isolation and are generally quite sensitive. Learners need to be taught time management skills and techniques on how to effectively manage their stress and anxiety levels which will help them curb underachievement and reach academic success by accessing their full potential.

3. Social Pressure:

Many learners don’t know how to make and/or keep friends. These skills do not come naturally and need to be taught.

Learners start to feel lonely and start to socially isolate themselves out of fear of not being accepted – also known as social- exclusion and persecution.

Learners need to be assessed and taught much needed effective communication and interpersonal skills.

4. Hidden Learning Gaps

Unidentified learning gaps from previous years can hinder current progress.

Some learners struggle with reading and learning tempo.

They tend to quickly give up or do not perform to their fullest potential and intellectual abilities.

5. The influences of Social Media

Social media is one of the leading causes of short attention spans and focus deficits. Children, and teenagers especially, consume large amounts of short-form-content on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube shorts, etc. which overstimulates the brain and shortens attention spans.

This can also be a contributing factor in the development of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Learners who struggle with these conditions often do so without knowing it.

They struggle to focus on their tasks, paying attention and class, struggle overall to achieve academically and may even fall victim to bullying. This causes a vicious cycle of stress, anxiety, and depressed moods.

But it does not have to be this way. Being a performer and finding purpose in academic achievement is not out of reach!
